Prairie Debut at a Glance

Prairie Debut was initiated in 1995 by the Manitoba Arts Council as a collaborative project between community presenters and provincial arts funders in the three Prairie Provinces (MB, SK and AB); the CBC and the Canada Council for the Arts (in an advisory role). It was developed in response to a need for interprovincial touring opportunities for the musical arts in Western Canada.

Working with community presenters and existing provincial network organizations throughout Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, Prairie Debut develops concert tours for Canadian professional classical and world musicians. By doing so, the Prairie Debut organization contributes to the career development of the artists, both emerging and established, and enriches the cultural life the communities with which it works. Based in Manitoba and incorporated in MB, SK and AB, Prairie Debut is an organization with charitable status (Charitable No. 86799 3495 RR0001).

Mandate

Prairie Debut is an interprovincial touring network whose mandate is “to strengthen opportunities for the presentation of professional classical and world music in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta.”

Goals

  • To encourage community presenters to strive for artistic excellence in the presentation of professional classical and world music
  • To strengthen the interprovincial relationship of community presenters
  • To support existing independent provincial touring networks
  • To contribute to the career development of professional Canadian classical and Canadian world music artists by creating touring opportunities
  • To contribute to audience development in the selection and presentation of professional Canadian classical and Canadian world music artists in Western Canada

The 2011/12 season is Prairie Debut’s 15th Season of touring activity in western Canada. Prairie Debut annually offers 3 tours with artists/ensembles to western Canadian communities of all sizes. Each season averages approximately 30 – 45 concerts per year with additional school shows, workshops and masterclasses in the presenting communities.

Since 1997, Prairie Debut has presented 85 artists in 35 tours to 62 communities in the Prairie provinces and Yukon. These tours have totalled over 425 concerts and reached more than 50,000 people. This has had an incredible impact on Western Canada’s arts community.

Prairie Debut works with communities right across the Prairies. Without their local enthusiasm and contribution, concerts would not exist. Prairie Debut has forged partnerships with all these presenters and is honoured to work with countless numbers of amazing people who take it upon themselves to bring great music to their own communities. For this reason alone, we are grateful.
